Janice McNeil HICKORY Janice MacLachlan McNeil, 84, of Hickory, passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at Morningside Assisted Living in Gastonia. Born Aug. 1, 1929 in Melrose, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Katheryn Butters and Wallace MacLachlan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Marvin McNeil; and two sisters, Nancy Ford and Lorna Sears. Mrs. McNeil retired from Hickory High School where she taught English. She also taught at Newton-Conover and North State Academy. She was active volunteer with the Hickory Community Theatre Guild and Landmark Society. She loved playing bridge with many local clubs. She was a world traveler, including her favorite trip to Africa to see her beloved elephants. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Walker and husband, Ken of Londonderry, N.H., and Karen Clark and husband, Alan of Gastonia; son, Marty McNeil and wife, Sandra of Hampstead; sister, Elaine MacLachlan and Dan Duryea of Hingham, Mass.; grandchildren, Katie, Kari, and Alex Walker, Ben and Stephanie Clark; and her loving dog, Belle. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory.
