“I think they have done a lot and I think that more could be done,” Simmons said, pointing to such issues as landscaping, steps to improve traffic flow and healthier food options at the store. ~NO. I understand the desire to make a business more aesthetically pleasing and complementary to a neighborhood. But, in a free-enterprise system we do not get to control the goods and services a business is to provide, except for how we choose to spend our money. If customers choose not to purchase what is in the store and the store wants to survive, the owners can choose to modify their inventory. Under our capitalist system, owners still have discretion -- at least for a little while longer.
Jerry,
Residents (who are also stakeholders by virtue of being tax-paying citizens) will likely suffer a decline in property values as a result of this store being misplaced in what is obviously a residential area. Also, America is not a ‘Capitalist System’- it is a system of Representative Democracy- where the People rule, not narrow corporate interests. The people who will be forced to live next to this store, should it be built, are well within their constitutional rights to oppose it.
I really think you don't understand capitalism and its relationship to a Democratic Republic. Again, I am not being critical of residents wanting to preserve the flavor of their neighborhood. But I'll sit back and watch how much success anyone has in dictating the level of food products a private retailer carries. Good luck with that.
Hickory is a Dollar Store mecca...all we have around here is Walmarts, Storage Buildings and Dollar Stores. It works because all the people in Hickory can only afford these things. Get better businesses than just manufacturing and you'll see the quality of life improve.
