Crawdads’ starting pitcher Tim Brennan (15) fires a pitch to the plate during a June game at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Crawdads open a four-game series tonight in Hickory.

PROSPECTS: Hickory Crawdads (team rankings by (Texas Rangers affiliate): RHP Hans Crouse (1), RHP Cole Winn (2), IF Jonathan Ornelas (18), 3B Sherten Apostel (22), RHP Ronny Henriquez (30)

Columbia Fireflies (New York Mets affiliate): SS Ronny Mauricio (2), 3B Mark Vientos (4), 2B Shervyen Newton (5), RHP Simeon Woods-Richardson (7), Thomas Szapucki (8), Christian James (24),

NOTES OF INTEREST:  Crawdads catcher Matt Whatley was named the South Atlantic League’s hitter of the week for the period ending June 22. The 23-year-old out of Claremore, Okla. is currently second in the league in walks and has stolen 19 bases.

What has been unusual about the stolen base totals for Whatley is he had just four in 96 pro games prior to this season… With the success of 1B Curtis Terry, who was named to the SAL all-star last month, the parent club Texas Rangers promoted the Lawrenceville, Ga. native to high-A Down East.

Returning to Hickory is Tyreque Reed, the team’s first baseman from a year ago. Reed belted 18 homers for the Crawdads in 2018 but struggled this year at Down East with a .216/.294/.378 slash line in 32 games. He was sent to the Rangers extended spring training camp in mid-May before joining Hickory on June 21.
