Falling tree kills man at Lake James

LAKE JAMES -- A Nebo man was killed Saturday morning when a tree fell on him out at the lake.

Herbert Craig Whitehead, 43, of Carswell Drive in Nebo was pronounced dead at the scene after a large tree fell on him along Lake James Road.

On Saturday morning at 9:21 a.m., McDowell EMS paramedics, along with Hankins-North Fork Fire Department and McDowell Rescue Squad responded to Lake James Road, just east of Black Bear Access Area.

They were responding to a report of a camper who had been struck by a tree. Emergency responders arrived on the scene to find the man pinned under a large tree that had fallen next to the water, according to information from the McDowell County EMS.

Whitehead was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency personnel were on the scene for nearly two hours.

Whitehead had reportedly been camping on the lake with a friend when the large tree snapped and killed him. No foul play is suspected in this incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
