Is there anything I can do to reduce this? A: I always have to advise anyone who rides to be aware of hazardous levels of engine noise. However, quieter engines and attenuation provided by modern helmets have made this less of a concern. The problem of wind noise can still persist and you are not alone in your complaint. There is a special type of custom made ear protectors made for this purpose. They are made by Westone Laboratories and were developed by the company president (who rides a Harley). They are small, soft and quite effective. They also provide an extra level of protection against noise while allowing enough hearing to detect emergency vehicles. The molds are hollow and are very comfortable when worn under a helmet. To obtain a pair of these you will need to have impressions taken of your ears. These impressions are sent to Westone to have the protectors custom molded. Contact an audiologist to find out more or please feel free to call my office to learn more.
